What is Ponceau 4R, Cochineal Red A (E124)?
Ponceau 4R (E124) is an artificial red food colouring used in sweets, desserts and some meat products. Normal amounts stay within safe limits; the kidney effects seen in animals needed doses far higher than people eat. It must carry the EU warning about children's activity and attention, and it can occasionally make hives worse in sensitive people.
